Gila County Cattle Growers Annual Salute to Ranching

The Globe-Miami chamber's annual Salute to Ranching was held Friday, November 21, 2014, at the Apache Gold Casino.

Rancher of the Year was awarded to Therese Griffin Hicks.  Ms. Hicks made history in Gila County as the first woman president of the Gila County Cattle Growers Association.

She went into this position with hands on taking the reins and running with them.  Known from Gila County to the State and National associations for her first-hand knowledge of public lands and the National Environmental Protection Act, ranchers can depend on her to take up their fight on many issues including NEPA, wild life and Game and Fish.

Ms. Hicks is well known and respected by US Forest officials both locally and nationally.  She is a successful businessperson, a nominee to serve on the board of the AZ Cattleman’s Association for public lands and a great ambassador for the ranching industry and Gila County itself.

Wrangler of the Year was awarded to Elaine Hagen McBride.  Elaine has been a tireless contributor to our association for many years.

From routine record keeping and updating computer programs, to assuring we have everything we need to put on a multi-million-dollar cattle sale with thousands of head of cattle in one day, keeping track of all the details.  From ordering supplies to producing timely advertising, developing and maintaining a first class website, she takes great pride in assuring accurate, high quality information is gathered, maintained and presented in up to date formats so useful in today’s evolving world.

Her talent and attention to the details necessary to keep GCCGA compliant with the rules and regulations of a non-profit are evident in her commitment to seeing a job through regardless of how intense it can get … and still smiling!

Among the 100 plus attending were Globe Mayor, Terry Wheeler, and Olympic Silver Medalist, Archery, Brady Ellison.  All enjoyed stories ranchers relate to told by local rancher and cowboy author, Duane Reece.  Duane’s book, Cowboy Sign, is a collection of short stories that span over 70 years of cowboyin’ and 20 years of rodeoin’.

The GCCGA looks forward to many years ahead as we continue to navigate the ebbs and flows of managing an Association and marketing our cattle in Gila County in whatever format best serves the economic interests of our ranchers and ultimately our community.
